Petition To Bring Back The Lumbia Airport
This is a petition letter to Mayor Oscar Moreno and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines to bring back the Lumbia Airport.
The Lumbia airport has been the airport in Cagayan De Oro City for the last 50 years and is located right at the edge of the city. In the last few years they moved several houses and trees in order to make a 4 lane highway to the airport to avoid traffic and congestion.
The runway was expanded and with evening or late night flights. In the same year that the highway was finally completed they have moved the airport to a new location because most probably due to the geographical structure in Lumbia (mountainous and with neighboring residential houses).
Without much prior notice and approval of the city residents the government from the previously elected Mayor Dongkoy Emano (and rumored to be convicted with graft and corruption as a governor) decided to proposed building the new ‘international’ airport of Laguindingan, damaging businesses and livelihoods of the people living around the airport.
TO THIS DAY WE ARE USING THE LUMBIA CONTROL TOWER FOR FLIGHT LANDINGS IN LAGUINDINGAN!!!! This shows that the new airport is ill-planned, overpriced and substandard.
The old Lumbia Airport
-15 mins away from the center of the city
-2 mins away from the golf course(major source of revenue from tourists most esp Koreans)
-15 mins away from the starting point for white water rafting, The main tourist income of cdo. (Rafting tours have since then suffered over a 90% drop in revenue and 2 of 5 rafting tours companies are for sale)
-5 mins away from Xavier estates, one of the prime subdivisions of the city.
-Took maximum of 5 mins to check in, 2 mins to pay 30 pesos terminal fee and had a nice boarding area although sometimes full passengers were allowed to go outside the terminal and have a coffee and buy some pasalubong from the stores outside
-The parking area is covered with shade from old trees planted in the earlier years of the airport
-It cost 200 to 250 pesos for the cab ride to anywhere in the city from the airport and vice versa.
-It had 27 flights a day
The New Laguindingan airport
-More than an hour to the city center through a highway with not much scenic sights and the highway for the airport is still under construction even though the airport is already open.
– Most ride to languindingan airport shuttle will cost you 200pesos worth
-Check in area is too small and look so crowded.
-Long lines in the check in, terminal fee payment, and boarding area is more full than the old airport
-Most flights are delayed
–MUSLIM PRAYING ROOM is just beside the BATHROOMS. A grave insult to them since they can hear the flushing of toilets and the smell coming from it.
-Parking area is hot and exposed to the full sun with no cafes or restos nearby for waiting relatives and friends to relax while waiting for arriving flights
-taxi to the city is 800 pesos or take a shuttle (minibus or van) to a terminal in the city then take a cab from there.
-It has no night flights until today because there are no runway lights.
-It has only 12 flights a day
-And until today there are NO INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS which is the main reason they said they needed to move the airport.
