Cagayan de Oro Online Shopping Scammer Caught

A man fleecing customers in an online shopping site was arrested Monday in Cagayan de Oro City, after one of his victims sought help from police.

The suspect, identified as Richie Caballero, would disappear once the victim made a down payment for products he was offering online, GMA Northern Mindanao’s Jeik Compo reported.

“Merong kokontak sa akin magtatanong magkano ang last price, once na magkasundo na kami, ipapa-advance ko siya ng P2,000 or P1,000 or P3,000. Once ma-receive ko na ang pera, hindi na nila ako makontak,” Caballero said.

Investigation showed he would offer to sell on a popular online site various gadgets like mobile phones and tablet computers.

Police said Caballero would use the fake names Henry Kho and Paulo Emano.

But one of his victims tipped off police, who deployed a team to a remittance center where Caballero was to collect a down payment.

While Caballero initially fled from the area, police caught him and recovered from him a receipt from the remittance center along with fake IDs.

“Sasampahan natin siya ng kasong estafa, false pretencies or imaginary transaction kasi ang nasabing gadgets na kanyang ino-offer, hindi matatanggap ng buyer,” said Divisoria police deputy station commander Inspector Jherson Estanilla.
