Description
Mindanao Summer Peace Festival 2013 (SPF13)
A great convergence where local traditional culture will marry contemporary art in the name of Peace with nature, through culture and between people.
From the Kalawaig River running through the mountains of Bukidnon to the coastline of the Celebes Sea in Zamboanga. Mindanao comes alive with art, culture and music in 2013 with one clear message to the rest of the country and to the world: Mindanao is ready for peace and ripe for exploration!
Through the vision of a young group of individuals with roots in Mindanao, the southern island will take the spotlight from Friday, April 26 to May 1, Labour Day with two festivals that will marry local traditional culture and contemporary art in the name of peace, with nature, through culture and between people.
For decades the island has been considered taboo as stories of war, kidnapping and political violence are continuously highlighted by mainstream media, ignoring the fact that most of Mindanao is peaceful. SPF13 has no political agenda and takes no sides but rather wishes to break boundaries and look at humanity and nature as a whole without prejudice.
SPF13 also offers a unique opportunity for an extended vacation this summer, which is educational, uplifting, inspirational and best of all fun! Guests will get to explore Mindanao’s true beauty and experience its unique culture while we all come together to celebrate peace.
SPF13 includes two festivals in two unique locations in Mindanao
“Luna Musikalawaig”; April 26, 27 and 28 at the Ki Bathala Gardens in Talakag Bukidnon
After the successful launch of the full moon festival by the river last year, Luna Musikalawaig, spreads its influence and will extend its activities to three days and two nights, allowing its guests more time to explore and immerse into Northern Mindanao.
Staying true to its commitment to keep it personal and free from undue influence the festival defies clichés and continues to stay close to its heart. Nestled in a protected jungle only 40 minutes from Cagayan de Oro City artists gather to express themselves and create installations that complement the existing infrastructure which is best described as “natural, sustainable and eclectic.”
“Paz Musika Del Mar”; April 30 and May 1 at the Paseo del Mar in Zamboanga
Paz Musica del Mar will highlight Zamboanga’s rich and colorful history and culture. From the arrival of its first inhabitants like the Subanen, a coastal people who believe in the spirit of their ancestors and the forces of nature or the Badjaos, the “sea gypsies” that move with the wind and the tide on their small houseboats called vintas, to the strong and defining Spanish influence built around the cornerstone of Fort Pilar which warded off invading pirates, Zamboanga’s identity has been is intimately connected to the sea.
Breaking the barriers of beliefs that separate our cultures, through the universal language of art and music, Paz Musica del Mar and the month-long events leading up to it will allow its audience to experience true Mindanaoan culture, soul and identity while celebrating life and being a catalyst for peace.
